MOORE PUT'S IN A BRACE FOR THE FONTWELL FESTIVE BANQUET

12 year old Goring One winner of the Lawrence Handicap Chase at
Fontwells Boxing day meeting
The usual Boxing day bash gave punters something to cheer about as Fontwell opened the gates to it's annual Boxing day meeting, just one of many meetings up and down the country to give the Christmas fed punters a reason to brave the wind, rain an cold.
Though the East Sussex track offered a bright and cheery start  to its seven card meeting, the well forecasted rain and wintry showers soon enveloped the figure of eight track, that by the last race darkness near fell on the turf offering soft going, heavy in places.

The first race the  2m 3f Southern Cranes and Access Conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle saw nine to post. Cirecester based Jenifer Mason sending her six year old Oskar Denarius to post the 6/4 fav.
Oskar Denarius
The field well packed together until around four out saw young 22 year old Ben Hicks make all on his first winner under rules as a professional being hard pressed by Michael Heard on River Dun who challenged the favourite to the line only to be denied by a neck at the close.
'James King rode him at Catterick on his win a few days back and it's the first time i have sat on him today,' mentioned the young man hailing from the New Forest.

22 year old Ben Hicks
'I was always looking to be positive on him as has been known to be very keen in his races, but he has jumped well and has hung on at the end.'
The horse may have a little break but the Conditional based with Warren Greatrex in Lambourn  was delighted to get a win under the belt, and was quick of the mark to show respect to his Jockey coach Nick Bentley after the win.
The ex point to point rider who had four wins between the flags showed that point to point, the 'grass roots' of the national Hunt game is certainly pushing out not only equine success but also in the riding front.
'I was always looking to be positive on him as has been known to be very keen in his races, but he has jumped well and has hung on at the end.'

The two mile Hurdle for the juveniles saw a small field of five to post, Olly Murphy sending top weight Oxford Blue to post the 7/4 fav. But its was Gary Moores Aiguille Rouge with Son Jamie on board who took a keen hold throughout the trip to claim the race by four lengths from Spirit of Rome from the Harry Whittington yard.
Aiguille Rouge

The young filly certainly showing connections The Winning Hand Partnership great hope as now on two wins, and three placed runs from eight starts shows this filly has a bright future.
Jamie rushing off to sort himself out for the next quickly mentions this horse jumped a little better than his eight length victory at the beginning of the month, the mud loving filly certainly showing good signs of improvement.

Aiguille Rouge on her second win in less than a month at Fontwell tracks second placed horse No5 Spirit of Rome throughout the race
A filly certainly to note on the softer ground and it would be interesting to see if the French bred filly by Falco can show more improvement in races with a little more class.

Three races in a row for the hurdles saw thirteen runners take to the track for the 2m 1 f novices hurdle, trainer Chris Gordon sending top weight Highway One O One to post the 8/11 fav.
James Bowen on board a young professional stemming from the point to point ranks were he was leading novice rider last season took the five year old on the outside of the rest and two out showing dominance as the eased the horse know on three wins from five starts to the front to take the race by twelve lengths, the runner up  giving the winner 7 lbs.

Chris Gordon sending top weight Highway One O One
to post the 8/11 fav.
James Bowen on board
'He has done that really well for me there and has acted on the soft ground nicely, I ran the track earlier and I though the ground was even all the way through, but by the time this one raced the outside rail was the place to be and it was proved right by the way he won.'
The jockey calling this one a progressive sort and looking at form the horse would be certain of better days at the races in the way he took weight and ground on.
Note should be taken the last time  the gelding was at Fontwell at the beginning of November Bryony Frost was on board that time finishing second to Bowen on one of his boss's (Nicky Henderson) horses. It was Bryony at Kempton a few minutes after this race took the Grade one Kauto Star Chase at Kempton, remarkable enough Bryony also a top  novice rider between the flags.
Highway One O One
The first race over the fences took the shape of  a 2m1f handicap chase, six runners to post the favourite being from the Nick Gifford yard Brown Bear, Leighton Aspell realising the top weight with 12 st 1 lbs was struggling in the heavy ground pulling up three from home.
This left the front running Bredon Hill Lad who showed a few signs of reluctance on the stable bend to stay on well to beat James Bowen and Chris Gordon  with Atlantic Roller by two lengths.
The winner trained by Susan Gardener and ridden by Lucy Gardener seemed game in the mud of Fontwell. ' He is such a monkey to ride in a race as well as at home but with nine wins (from thirty one starts) you can't knock him really, I mentioned to mum I would love a pair a blinkers on him, he just knows were all the exits and run outs are and makes you work hard to keep his mind on the job, but he really jumps well and sticks it out to the end.'
Bredon Hill Lad
The trainer with not a thought of putting head wear on the ten year old is happy with the hunting ground that is Fontwell, a win with the gelding back in March on good ground shows without the test in character this versatile chaser may have been into double winning figures by know.
Still as Christmas is all about family it was good to see  a family affair taking the spoils in I'm sure what Lucy would of mentioned would of been an eventful ride.
Bredon Hill Lad trained by Susan Gardener (centre)
and ridden by Lucy Gardener
The richest race of the afternoon was the £4111 to the winner 2m 1 f handicap hurdle. Eight runners to post.
Again another family concern and a double for the afternoon for the Moore family with Gary and Jamie bringing home Knocknanuss a seven length winner from Nick Gifford's Notre Ami.
The 5/4 fav  ridden wide for the better ground by the jockey well versed in the In's and outs of the Sussex figure of eight track had to work a little to keep the seven year old by Beneficial on the straight and narrow but the gelding stayed on well on this nice type.
The horse now with six runs to his credit, three wins and three runners up spots looks a promising sort for Cisswold stables and is a nice win in a class three type hurdle on testing ground could and may see this one step up in class, proof now in the pudding and not of the Christmas variety that is, that if the weather remains inclement and soft ground on offer the horse should be taken seriously if seen out in fine company.
Knocknanuss

The second of only two chase races saw seven runners take to the figure of eight track for the 3m 2f Lawrence Handicap chase.
Tom Weston sent his Silent Man down to the start the 15/8 fav but was made silent by the twelve year old Goring One from the Anna Newton-Smith yard who is a firm favourite at the course to come home the four and a half length winner from Comers Hill. The favourite back seven lengths in fourth.
Goring One

Andrew Thornton in the saddle now 45 and has been riding since the early nineties worked hard and with great knowledge of a local track to ask the horse on his 43rd run and 9th win to take and retake the lead holding on well at the last and beyond.
'I'm really please with the win on this one, its a great tonic for his owner George Goring is not that well at the moment, and I love this horse to bits. He still attacks the first fence like a five year old, i have won about seven on him but he is a diamond of a horse and one I love to get on.'
The jockey with only two rides for the busy boxing day mentioned that he wold love to say see you here next year but who knows,'my wife and child are not here so it still goes on from today, when you see both of them at the races and me on winner that might just be the day I say no more, but we'll see.'

The jockey who took his 1000th winner just a year ago certainly showed no signs of lack of enthusiasm and has to go down in the National Hunt history books as one of the UK's elite riders, when he will give up, well not today that's for sure the story continues.

'He still attacks the first fence like a five year old, i have won about seven on him but he is a diamond of a horse and one I love to get on.'
The final race of the afternoon was the 2m 5 f handicap hurdle, light fading fast nine went to post Neil Mullhollands Molly Carew went off the 3/1 fav, the field not hanging around to get the race over and done with Harry Teal setting a strong pace in front with Marienstar from the Neil King yard.
The pace playing into the hands of top weight Ellens Way from the yard of Jeremy Scott who from three out dominated the strong pace to  win easily at the finish beating Olly Murphy's Undefined Beauty by fourteen lengths.

Ellens Way
Ridden by Matt Griffiths who mentioned,'It was a good performance really in that ground off top weight, we have always though a lot of her she has just taken a long time having broke her pelvis it has taken time to get her back into the swing of things, she is better over three miles to be honest.'
Two wins from six starts this five year old mare certainly looks the chasing type, the jockey agreeing but he mentioned would not be until next season.
But all in all an impressive win from a progressing mare who would do not harm to be carefully watched over the months to see which way this horse goes.
Ridden by Matt Griffiths who mentioned It was a good performance really in that ground off top weight.
Well that's it for another year at Fontwell, again good quality, heartey national hunt racing, which reamins one of my favorite courses to attend.
More hopefully in 2018, but if you want to see 2017's bolgs take a look at

FESTIVE JOY AT FONTWELL AS SKELTON SCORES 100

Some of these jockeys just let themselves go, Tom Scu and gang pose with the winner of the Fontwell's Christmas jumper competition
The festive feeling was about at Fontwell park, only two more meetings at the East Sussex course for 2017 but the Festive Fontwell race day braved the cold element sweeping the UK at present to  make it a joy for the punters that braved the cold to watch the seven race midweek card on offer.

Trainer Gary moore after the win with Aiguille Rouge
in the opening Juvenile Hurdle

The opening race a 2m 1f juvenile hurdle nine runners went to post. The in form yard of Dan Skelton sent off the  10/11 fav, but the winner came from the popular yard for the Fontwell faithful of Gary Moore as Aiguille Rouge ridden by Jamie Moore beat the favourite a good distance back in fourth with runner up Acaro an eight length second.
The french bred three year old filly seemed to relish the heavy twisting figure of eight course with only her third run for the Moore team.

Hard pressed from three out the juvenile held on well up the inclined run in and looked an impressive sort, and i should reckon is one that would of caught the eye of the master of Sisswood racing stables.
Jockey Jamie Moore riding his 26th winner of the season was pleased for the filly and also the owners The Winning Hand Partnership who have put a lot of faith into this three year old by Falco.
Jamie Moore riding his 26th winner
A filly to watch, and it would be plain to see likes the cut in the ground it would not surprise me if this one turns out well from her run, and we see this filly out again Boxing day at course and distance, the ground looking like not to improve much over the weeks. We could be in with a fair quick follow up shout.

The second race of the seven race card was over the larger obstacles for the novices over 2m 2f.
Greyed A (right) with runner up Bobonyx (left)
Champion Jockey Richard Johnson riding for  Richard Newland took the 15/8 shot six year old grey, ably named Greyed A to the front two out and stayed on well with very little pressure from the Shane Quinlan ridden horse Bobonyx eight lengths back in second.
' He loves very soft ground, but with the conditions very testing we just schooled him around for the first two circuits before putting him into the race, but he has picked up nicely for me and won it well in the end.'
The jockeys coming in mentioning the ground as very testing, but wet enough for the horses to get through it seemed to fall short for the favourite of the the race the 5/4 shot Staunton from the Richard Vaughan yard who finished fourth of the four runners at post.
The grey by the horse of the year at the turn of the millennium Daylami pulled up in his maiden voyage over fences when going to post the 3/1 fav, but certainly made up for that with a impressive win in testing conditions.
Greyed A
Johnson now on his 116th winner of the season, still on top rankings and hungry as ever to take rides on. The horse one to note as the season moves forward.

Nearly half way through the card, the 2m 3 f novices hurdle went to the top weight favourite from the in form Skelton yard.
Roksana ridden by Harry Skelton took the inner rail around the home turn before taking the race up two out pulling away in the end from placed horse The Vocalist from the Henderson string by fourteen lengths.
Roksana ridden by Harry Skelton

' She is really progressing in the right way, and i like the way she finishes her races going up to the line giving her all.'
Mention the jockey now on winner 99 for the season.
' She is going in the right direction and next season she could really be anything, a little bit free on her opening runs but she has certainly settled down well now.'
With two wins from fours starts, in addition coming out of the stable in good form this five year old mare by Dubai Destination looks a sort to sit up and take note, especially beating a decent horse from team Henderson in The Vocalist by a commanding distance in testing ground and giving away 6lbs
The jockey now on the brink of his 100th winner certainly enjoyed this one, little did he know it was to be his day in the next.

' She is going int the right direction and next season she could really be anything.'

The main race of the afternoon the £4812 to the winner 3m 2f handicap chase not only put a double for the day for team Skelton but also placed jockey Harry Skelton on 100 winners for the season. Sixteen behind the champion Richard Johnson.
Riding all winners for his brother Skelton bought home 100/30 shot Get on Yager seven lengths in front of 15/8 fav top weight Ramses De Teilee for the David Pipe yard.
'I was mentioning to the owners just now this horse is a proper National Hunt horse, soft ground three miles over fences. He really enjoyed it out there.' mentioned the jockey delighted with his 100th win.
'It was not until April last year I got the 100 up North. I could of not done this though without the work of Dan (Skelton) and the guys at home who have put a hell of a lot of work in to get me the 100 so early.'
Jockey Harry Skelton on 100 winners for the season

The jockey ever so humble realises that the chase for rides in the weighing room is fierce, not bothered at all that all the winners have come from his brother and not outside contacts. 'it's a hard game, most yards know have three to four jockeys after rides so I'm blessed that  Dan is doing so well to give me 100 winners.'
100/30 shot Get on Yager seven lengths in front of 15/8 fav top weight Ramses De Teilee for the David Pipe yard.
The seven year old gelding now on four wins from nine starts looks like he will have good times ahead for owners Dick and Mandy Higgins, and will certainly be close to the heart of the jockey for months to come

£500 given by Fontwell to the winner of the
best Christmas jumper

Evens favourite Our Merlin took  the 2m 1 f handicap hurdle, six went to post for Robert Walford to send his five year old gelding on his eighth outing to claim his second win in no less than eight days, the last being at Plumpton.
Ridden by Harry Cobden who took the gelding around the outside for most of the way around mentioned,' He was much more enthusiastic here today that at Plumpton last week,'
Our Merlin
Blandford trainer Robert Walford mentioned the gelding did not show anything at all last season, asked for the reason why he said, 'He was just very week actually, i used to ride his mother Lorgenette and she liked it very soft also. He jumps well enough and it would be nice to get him in again before the weights get really hoicked on him, we will see.' The horse would look like he would take a fence maybe would take his chance in Novice chasing if the handicap seems to be an issue, but one to look out for when running again that's for sure.
Our Merlin  leads the firld of Marmont 3rd and The mighty Ash

Norphin  with owners after his 20/1 win in the
2m 3 f Handicap hurdle
The penultimate race a 2m 3 f handicap chase, four went to post Anthoney Honeyball saddling the 5/4 fav Le Coeur Net for Noel Fehily.
Four out Fehily made his move to take up the running on the favourite. A blunder causing the unseat of the Irishman leaving the 20/1 shot bottom weight Norphin to make his move and slip the field to make a twenty length lead over Spiritofchartwell already a winner and two runners up spots to his credit at the course.

Jockey Liam Treadwell mentioned,' the light weight and testing ground suited this fella, we have planned to get round and see what's what with him really, he jumped well and he is what he is, but off the weight it would not have surprised many if he went in with a good run .
Trained by Seamus Mullins who mentioned much of the same about the horse on his maiden win from thirty one starts, 'it shows there is a race for every horse really, but you always have to be in the race to have a shot at the race, i honestly though the ground was a little too soft for him.'
The Master of  Wilsford Stables also has this ones full brother in the year coming on well but was happy with jockey and horse on his performance  for the day.
Norphin pulls away from placed horses Spiritofchartwell and Bound Hill

The final race of the afternoon a there year olds and upwards handicap hurdle over the 2m 3f went to the six year old mare Willshebetrying from the Mark Hoad yard. Ridden by last seasons champion novice rider  point to pointing James Bowen turning professional at the beginning of the season. The six year old mare on her first win of her eighteen  starts took the race on at the final hurdle and staying on well up the Fontwell incline to beat Project Mars by a couple of lengths.
The filly who on form looks to have loved it the heavy surface the jockey mentioning,'She has proven form on the ground and half way round i thought i was in with a chance, with my claim she was entitled to have a good run today and it is now hoped she can continue to progress for the owners.'
Willshebetrying takes the lead after the final hurdle from Project Mars (right) and Clondaw Westie on the inside
The jockey under the stable of Nicky Henderson looked eager for the rest of the season with things going to plan for the young jockey.
Willshebetrying

A meeting for the brave at Fontwell in a week forecasted for some really wintry blasts as the days go on.
Next meeting at the course is the Boxing day meet, a good attendance expected to match with the races to boot, we could be in for  a cracking afternoon's racing on the 26th.

All of 2017 meetings blogged from Fontwell can be viewed at
